Updated 2025- If you are Mexican, reside or are in the United States and your passport is about to expire - or has already expired -, you can renew it at the more than 50 consulates or at the embassy that Mexico has in the United States. In order to renew it you must first request a consular appointment, for which you have 3 options: via telephone, via the internet and, starting in May 2023, you can now Request your consular appointment by WhatsApp.
Why is it important that you have a valid passport?
The passport is the document issued to Mexicans by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico (SRE) and that allows entry to other countries proving Mexican identity and nationality. Its processing is independent of the immigration status of the Mexican who requests it.
It also allows you free passage, which is necessary so that foreign authorities recognize you as a Mexican citizen and can provide you with help - and protection - in case you need it.
Now that you know the importance of having a valid passport, below we tell you everything you need to know to make an appointment to renew your Mexican passport in the United States.
When can it be renewed?
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) accepts the application for passport renewal or exchange in the following cases:
- When its validity ended.
- During the entire year prior to the date on which its validity ends. That is, it expires in less than a year.
- If you lost it, it was stolen or it was accidentally destroyed.
- When the inner sheets are full. This is when the inside pages have already been used and there is no space for customs to place entry or exit stamps on the passport.
