Updated 2025-  If you are Mexican, reside or are in the United States and your passport is about to expire - or has already expired -, you can renew it at the more than 50 consulates or at the embassy that Mexico has in the United States. In order to renew it you must first request a consular appointment, for which you have 3 options: via telephone, via the internet and, starting in May 2023, you can now Request your consular appointment by WhatsApp.

Why is it important that you have a valid passport?

The passport is the document issued to Mexicans by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico (SRE) and that allows entry to other countries proving Mexican identity and nationality. Its processing is independent of the immigration status of the Mexican who requests it.

It also allows you free passage, which is necessary so that foreign authorities recognize you as a Mexican citizen and can provide you with help - and protection - in case you need it.  

Now that you know the importance of having a valid passport, below we tell you everything you need to know to make an appointment to renew your Mexican passport in the United States.

When can it be renewed?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) accepts the application for passport renewal or exchange in the following cases:

1. When its validity ended.
2. During the entire year prior to the date on which its validity ends. That is, it expires in less than a year.
3. If you lost it, it was stolen or it was accidentally destroyed.
4. When the inner sheets are full. This is when the inside pages have already been used and there is no space for customs to place entry or exit stamps on the passport.

How to renew your Mexican passport if you live in the United States?

If you reside in the United States you must schedule an appointment through My Consulate , the  SRE appointment portal  https://citas.sre.gob.mx. You can also make your appointment by phone by calling the toll-free number. MyConsulate +1 (424) 309-0009 .

Before making your appointment remember have at hand your curp and your passport to renew , since you will need to provide some information that comes in them, such as the date of issue and expiration of the passport.

Once you have confirmed your appointment by phone, WhatsApp or online, you must show up on the assigned day and time to carry out your renewal process.

Preferably arrive 15 minutes before your procedure to avoid setbacks. 

My Consulate  It is the appointment system in Mexican consulates online from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It was made available to Mexicans abroad as of March 1, 2021; It replaced the Mexitel dating portal.

What do you need to renew your Mexican passport in the USA?

The requirements for renewing a Mexican passport are as follows.

1. Request an appointment through MyConsulate, by phone or WhatsApp
2. Go to the consulate on the date and time of your appointment
3. Present the passport that you are going to exchange
4. Pay passport fees for the requested validity

Take the following into account. 

The day of your appointment Present your expired or expiring passport . Once the process is completed, they will return it to you already cancelled, and they will give you the new one.

If it was stolen or lost, you must file a theft or loss report with the competent local authority.

If you are not able to obtain this report, you can ask for help at the consular office  to draw up a detailed report. Keep in mind that you'll be asked for documentary evidence, just as if you were applying for a passport for the first time.

If your passport has an issue date prior to 1995 and was issued in Mexican territory or if it is prior to 2007, and has been processed abroad, you will additionally have to prove your Mexican nationality and your identity with the documents accepted by the SRE.

If your passport is mutilated or damaged, you must present it that way. The consulate will give you a form to fill out and sign containing a declaration under oath of truth in which you will state the facts. In this case the procedure can be considered by the consular office as Passport Replacement.

What is the price of the Mexican passport in 2025?

To renew the Mexican passport in the United States, a fee payment must be made.

The consular fee for a passport varies according to the validity requested by the Mexican citizen. The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs offers four options in 4: 2025, 1, 3, and 6 years. The 10-year option is no longer available.

In 2025 this is the cost for passport renewal at the consulates and embassy of Mexico in the United States.

Take into account that: 

Validity for 1 year is available for Mexicans under 1 year of age and is granted for consular protection. In the case of the 10-year option, it can only be chosen by Mexicans who are of legal age; that is, from 18 years of age onwards.

In the case of emergency, the consulate allows the Mexican to appear to carry out the procedure without having requested a prior appointment. They must show a document that proves that their case is an emergency for which they need to renew their Mexican passport in the USA, such as a medical certificate. The payment of duties in this case is increased by 30% above the amounts in the table.

Mexican adults over 60 years of age benefit from a 50% discount on the payment of renewal or exchange fees for a Mexican passport in the USA.

Renewal for Minors

Mexicans under 18 years of age must appear at the appointment accompanied by their mother and father, or their legal guardians.

In addition to complying with the requirements described above, you must also complete the form at the consulate. parent or guardian consent form (OP-7 or OP-8)  and present the minor's Mexican birth certificate. If you don't have it, here we tell you how to get it.

If any of the parents or guardians do not reside in the consulate area, they must go to the Delegation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico or to a consular office abroad closest to their home to grant their authorization.

If the mother or father – or one of the guardians – has died, a certified copy of the death certificate must be presented on the day of renewal.
