US citizens will be able to renew their passport online, through a new service from the US Department of State (DOS). The service will allow travelers to do this procedure without having to send documents by mail or go to a passport agency in person.

However, users who need to renew their US passports online will need to complete this process as soon as possible, since this process will be available for a limited time.  

When can the renewal be done online? 

The new “blue” passport online renewal test system will open for a limited time at noon, each day, starting at 1:00 pm Eastern Time.  

The system has a limited number of daily applications, so applicants who do not make it must restart the passport renewal process the next day. The DOS said, “requests are being limited in order to monitor the performance of the new system in real time.”

We appreciate your patience as we test our system and prepare for the full launch of the updated online passport renewal system," the DOS said on its website.

What are the requirements to renew the American passport online? 

To renew the passport online in the new system, the DOS imposes a series of specific requirements, and those who do not comply with them must complete the process by traditional methods, either by mail or in person at a passport agency or center.

The requirements are as follows: 

• The passport you are renewing is or has been valid for 10 years, and you are 25 years old or older. 
• The passport being renewed was issued between 2009 and 2015, or more than 9 years, but less than 15 years from the date you plan to apply.
• Name, sex, date or place of birth will not be changed.
• You will not be traveling abroad for at least 8 weeks from the date of application. 
• You are applying for a tourist passport and not a special issue passport (diplomatic, official, service)
• You live in the United States (in a state or territory)
• You have your passport with you, and it is not damaged or mutilated, and you have not previously declared it lost or stolen.
• You can pay for your passport with a credit or debit card.
• You can upload a digital passport photo to the system.

Steps to follow to renew online 

The first thing to do to renew the American passport online is to create an account before starting to fill out the application in the DOS page.

Once the account is created, you must click the “Renew your passport” button on the application home page. The request can be saved to finish later, but there is a risk of not being able to submit it if the daily request limit is exhausted. 

• Enter your most recent passport information:  Travelers will need to provide the information as it appears on their most recent passport. The US Department of State requires that a passport be valid for at least 10 years and expire within one year or be expired for less than five years.  
• Provide information about travel plans : Travelers will have to provide information about their travel plans. If you travel abroad in less than 8 weeks, you will not be able to renew online.
• Upload a digital photo:  Upload an original digital photo in .JPEG format to complete the application, color, 2x2 inches, recent, simple white background, without glasses. To see examples of how the photo should appear, you can click here.
• Sign and pay:  To complete the renewal application, you must pay the fees by credit or debit card. To pay, click the "Sign and Pay" button, which will take you to another secure website—pay.gov. After payment, you will receive a confirmation email. 
• Sign up to receive email updates:  Applicants can register here   to receive email updates on the status of your application one week after you apply

The cost of renewing an American passport varies depending on the type of document requested:  

• Notebook: $130
• Card: $30
• Both: $160

According to DOS, Applicants will have up to 30 days to complete the application  after having started it. If you do not complete it within those days, you will have to start the online process again.
