The American passport, known as "the key to the world," can be obtained in booklet or card form and processed in person or through the postal service when applying for the first time or wishing to renew it.

The issuance of this document is carried out by the United States Department of State, which claims to have the most secure passport in the world.

“Next generation” passport

The new US passport, “Next Generation” (NGP), is a document with modern features and redesigned to be more secure than the current electronic passport. The State Department began issuing it in 2021.

The Department uses new technologies to produce a stronger passport with greater security features, its features include a polycarbonate data page, laser-etched personalization and an updated design.

Passport book or card for the first time

The “passport book” is proof of identification and US citizenship, and can be used for international travel by air, land and sea.

While the “passport card” can be requested by U.S. citizens in addition to the “traditional” passport book, however, the passport card cannot be used to international air travel

The passport card is the size of a credit card and can only be used to enter the United States by land or sea from Canada, Mexico or Bermuda.

Validity and delivery time of the American passport

The passport for people over 16 years of age is valid for 10 years, while for children under 16 it is valid for 5 years.

The routine passport processing takes between 6 and 9 weeks, and to obtain it faster than 3 to 5 weeks, an extra cost of $60 must be paid.
