WakeMed provides emergency care and medically necessary services to all who request them, regardless of their ability to pay or whether they have health insurance.

In Wake County, Enlace Latino NC  identified five major hospitals providing essential medical services, access to interpreters and financial aid programs for uninsured or low-income patients.

Some of these hospitals are under the same health provider, in this case WakeMed Health, which has several hospital campuses in the area.

WakeMed Health

WakeMed Health is a non-profit health system in North Carolina, which has three hospital campuses serving the Wake County community.

Interpreter services?  Yes, the WakeMed Health hospitals offer interpretation and language assistance services for patients.

Language interpreters are available 24 hours a day and can be requested through your ward nurse.

Is it covered with or without health insurance?  WakeMed provides emergency care and medically necessary services to all who request them, regardless of their ability to pay or whether they have health insurance. This means that if you go to the WakeMed emergency room needing urgent treatment, you will receive care even if you do not have health insurance.

For patients without health insurance, WakeMed offers an automatic discount 30% on medical services and 62% on hospital services that are not covered by any other pre-established discount or for which a third party is responsible.

This discount will be automatically applied to your bill and only applies if there is no other source of payment, such as a health insurance company or a third party that is or may be responsible for your medical expenses.

Financial aid programs?  WakeMed Health offers financial support to certain patients who are eligible for the Financial Assistance Program.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Must be a resident of North Carolina.
  • Family income below 300% of the federal poverty level.
  • Limited assets (an asset can be a car, a house, etc.)

However, undocumented residents may be approved for debt relief with the administration's approval.

You must complete and submit the financial assistance application and all supporting documentation to WakeMed within 240 days of the date of the patient responsibility letter you receive from WakeMed.

For more information about financial assistance, call the hospital directly or visit the Patient Registration office available Monday through Friday at Cary Hospital from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm, Raleigh Campus from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and WakeMed North from 8:30 am to 5 pm.

WakeMed North Hospital  It is a smaller community hospital in north Raleigh that offers emergency care, surgical services, and maternity services.

UNC Health

UNC Health is a private, non-profit healthcare system with a main hospital campus in Raleigh, UNC Rex Hospital.

The hospital has 660 beds and offers emergency services, hospitalization, surgery, women's services and much more.

Interpreter services?  Yes, according to the Patient Rights and Responsibilities policies, UNC Rex Hospital offers interpretation and language assistance services to patients who need help communicating in other languages.

Is it covered with or without health insurance?  Under federal law (EMTALA), UNC Rex Hospital does not deny emergency treatment even if you do not have health insurance.

Financial aid programs?  UNC Rex Hospital participates in the UNC Health Financial Assistance Program, which helps patients who do not have health insurance or who have insufficient coverage to pay for medically necessary services.

Duke Raleigh Hospital

Duke Raleigh Hospital is a campus of Duke University Hospital, which belongs to the Duke Health network.

The hospital has 204 inpatient beds and offers services in oncology, cardiovascular care, neuroscience, and other specialties. They also have community outreach and educational programs.

Interpreter services?  Yes, interpreters are available free of charge for patients who are deaf, hard of speaking, or have difficulty understanding English. If you need the assistance of an interpreter, please contact your nurse.

Is it covered with or without health insurance?  Duke Health has agreements with most of the major health insurance companies and transplant networks.

Like other hospitals operating in the United States under federal law (EMTALA), Duke Health must treat anyone in an emergency, regardless of their health insurance status or ability to pay.

Financial aid programs?  Duke Health offers financial assistance to patients who meet the requirements, according to federal poverty guidelines.

During your visit, financial advisors will inform you about the different financial assistance options that can help you cover the costs of the services.

To receive financial assistance, you must complete the application.

If no external financial assistance is available, a discount will automatically be applied to your bill based on your declared income level.
