As if you were using an ATM, users now have the facility to make various procedures from the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) at new self-service kiosks installed at Harris Teeter stores in Mecklenburg and Wake counties. 

The first 3 kiosks were installed in March as part of a pilot program by the DMV and Harris Teeter in Charlotte, Raleigh and Fayetteville, but this week it was announced that six additional kiosks will be installed in those two regions of the state. 

There are now three more self-service kiosks in the Charlotte area and three more kiosks in the Raleigh area, for a total of four each. 

According to DMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin, self-service kiosks are intended to facilitate customer service, shortening lines and wait times by using technology to provide services outside of typical business hours.

Express self-service kiosks are located at the following Harris Teeter stores: 

Charlotte area 

• Quail Corners (8538 Park Road, Charlotte)
• Town Center Plaza (8600 University City Boulevard, Charlotte)
• Central Avenue (1704 Central Avenue, Charlotte)
• Village of Riverbend (4701 Smith Farm Road, Charlotte)

Raleigh Area 

• Village District (500 Oberlin Road, Raleigh)
• Cary Village Square (885 Walnut Street, Cary)
• Fuquay Crossing (1371 East Broad Street, Fuquay-Varina)
• The Corners at Brier Creek (4221 Corners Parkway, Raleigh)

Fayetteville 

Highlands Center (2800 Raeford Road, Fayetteville)

The DMV plans to add a tenth kiosk at Fort Liberty later this year, with more kiosks to be added as certain transaction thresholds are met.

Services that can be performed at the kiosks 

Customers can now complete the following services at self-service kiosks:

• Renew a driver's license or ID card (unless you renewed it online last time)
• Request a duplicate 
• Change the address that appears on your driver's license, permit, or state ID card (you must know your driver's license/ID number to complete this transaction)
• Vehicle registration renewals
• Paying property tax on a new vehicle

Benefits of using self-service kiosks 

The DMV indicated that the following are some of the benefits of using a kiosk to carry out the procedures:

• Customers will leave with a temporary driver's certificate or ID card, including a photo, that can be used until the official credential arrives in the mail (usually two to three weeks). 
• Customers will have a printed registration card and a license plate decal that can then be applied to the vehicle.

Cost of transactions 

The kiosk pilot is at no cost to the state. However, the company Intellectual Technology, Inc. (ITI), which is the private company partnered with the state for the pilot plan, is compensated through a $4.95 fee per transaction. 

Customers will also be charged a 2% credit/debit card processing fee.

DMV Installs 6 Additional Self-Service Kiosks in Mecklenburg and Wake Counties
