Every year, thousands of Latin American agricultural workers try to obtain temporary jobs in the United States through the foreign visa programs. In most cases, they learn about H-2A job openings through recruiters who contact them in their home communities. 

However, the recruitment process can be quite obscure and workers are often fraud victims by the people who offer them employment.

For this reason, as explained to Enlace Latino NC Katie Becker, Community Education Coordinator Legal Help for Farm Workers, “it is useful to know some resources that could help someone locate a potential H-2A employer directly.”

In other words, if you want to get an H-2A job you don't always have to trust a recruiter. “They can try to contact employers directly,” Becker said.

How to access H-2A job offers directly?

There are several resources that allow workers to contact employers directly.

One of the most recommended by Becker is The Migrant Portal.

The Migrant Portal is a service of the NGO Migrant Rights Center. It works as a job board that connects job seekers with job opportunities.

As Becker indicated, in El Portal Migrante “each job is translated into Spanish, has the employer's contact information and is linked to the reviews that other workers have written.”  

In any case, from the site itself they clarify that the existence of a job offer on El Portal Migrante does not guarantee that it is a reliable offer. It is always recommended to verify any job offer before paying money or sharing personal details. 

To verify a job offer, call 01.800.590.1773 from Mexico or 1.855.234.9699 from the US. You can also write totrabajos@cdmigrante.org with the name of the US company offering the job.

Hired

Another site recommended by North Carolina Legal Aid is Hired, which is also part of the Migrant Rights Center network.

On this page the workers themselves write comments about their experiences with contractors, companies or recruiters.

Although these are not verified reviews, the truth is that a large number of positive or negative comments about a company or recruiter can be a good indication to take into account and avoid surprises.

National Employment Service of Mexico

Another of the recommended sites to contact H-2A jobs directly without having to go through recruiters is the National Employment Service of Mexico.

This is an official page of the Mexican government where job offers are disseminated in different countries, including the United States.

Seasonal Jobs

The United States Department of Labor also has an official site where H-2A job postings are shared.

The page is called Seasonal Jobs (Seasonal Jobs) and provides telephone numbers and emails to be able to contact employers directly.

To access employer contacts it is necessary to click on “Recruitment Information” in each job offer.

However, this site is only available in English.

How to verify if an H-2A job offer is real?

In any case, the Migrant Rights Center offers a free service in Spanish to help verify if a job offer is real or if it is a scam.

To verify if a job offer is real, simply call the Migrant Rights Center at 01 800 590 1773 (from Mexico) or 1 855 234 9699 (from the US). An operator will ask you some information about the job offer (for example the name of the company) and then will be able to give you an answer.
