The first Sunday of Advent 2024 will be December 1st. This day marks the beginning of the Advent season, a time of special preparation and anticipation for the birth of Jesus in the Christmas o Christmas Eve. One of the most significant traditions of this first Sunday is to light the first candle of the Advent Wreath, which is traditionally purple. This color symbolizes hope, as well as the call to silence, prayer and reflection.

Advent wreath: the colours of the candles and their meaning

The Advent Wreath has a deep symbolic meaning in the Christian tradition. It is made of four candles, each representing a virtue.

  • First Sunday | Hope: prophecy candle (purple)
  • Second Sunday | Peace: Bethlehem candle (purple color)
  • Third Sunday | Joy: shepherd's candle (pink)
  • Fourth Sunday | Love: Angel Candle (violet or purple color)

Some homes usually include lighting a white candle in the center of the wreath, which is lit on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve. This candle symbolizes the birth of baby Jesus.

Options for the first Sunday candle

Regarding the type of candle used for the first Sunday of Advent, there are several options. One of them is to use simple candles, which symbolize the humility and simplicity of Mary, the mother of Jesus. These candles can be of different colors, such as purple, which is the color traditionally associated with Advent.

Another commonly used option is votive candles, also known as large candles. These candles are usually larger and more striking than simple candles, and are placed on the Advent Wreath. Each candle represents a week of Advent, and they are lit progressively as time goes on.

Regardless of the type of candle chosen, what is important is the symbolic meaning that this act has. Lighting the candle on the first Sunday of Advent in 2024 is a way to remember the hope and joy that the arrival of Jesus brings to the world.

Advent Wreath 2024

In the Catholic and Christian tradition, Advent represents the previous days that Mary waited for the arrival of Jesus. For this reason, the Church suggests that Catholics reflect through sentence and the ritual of lighting a candle placed on the Advent Wreath each of the four Sundays prior to December 25.

In some homes a fifth candle is used, which is White and is placed in the center of the wreath to symbolize the birth of Jesus. This candle is lit on Christmas Day.
