North Carolina, Raleigh-  If you are a Mexican person working in the United States, you can join the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and insure your family in Mexico so that they have coverage in the five insurance policies offered by the IMSS: 

  • Illness and maternity care
  • Occupational risk
  • Disability and life
  • Nurseries and social benefits
  • Retirement, unemployment in advanced age and old age. 

How to join the IMSS from the United States?

To join the IMSS from the United States, you must follow these steps:

Visit the “Independent Workers” section of the “Bringing the IMSS Closer to the Citizen” Website and click on Start the procedure . You can also contact the Financial Advice Window  from your consulate or call 011 52 444166 5415  Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm (Mexico City Time). 

It is necessary to have the CURP (Unique Population Registration Key) that you can still process online here. They must also have the Social Security Number (NSS) to carry out the IMSS affiliation process.

Remember, the beneficiaries in Mexico can be: Spouse or common-law wife, children, children under 16 years of age or up to 25 years of age if they are studying, father and mother, if they live at the worker's home in Mexico and are financially dependent on the insured. .

In addition to the extensive health and safety services for family members, another benefit you have as an independent worker is the reactivation of your Retirement Savings Fund if you have a history of contributions during your stay in Mexico.

To reactivate the savings fund you will have to register the identification data, the monthly income report and a capture line to make the payment of your installments and thus pay your Afore.
