Middle and high school students living in the Charlotte area will have the opportunity to audition this Tuesday, September 15, for the Nuestro Tiempo Latin Jazz Youth Orchestra.
Auditions
Auditions are held at the VAPA Center for the Arts, located at 700 N. Tryon St., Charlotte, NC 28202, in Uptown, from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm

Free program
The local organization Jazz Arts, which promotes this initiative, indicated that this fall music education program is free and that weekly rehearsals will be held every Tuesday, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, starting Tuesday, September 22.
Who can audition
Nuestro Tiempo accepts middle and high school students (grades 7-12) with at least one year of experience on their instrument.
We invite you to audition for woodwind, brass, percussion, and rhythm section players, as well as vocalists. No prior experience in Latin jazz is required.

Our Time was created in 2022
The Latin Jazz Orchestra Nuestro Tiempo was created in 2022, with the goal of bringing young musicians closer to the rich intersection between jazz and the musical traditions of Latin America.
Students in grades 7-12 explore the Latin jazz repertoire while developing skills in clave and Afro-Cuban rhythms, improvisation, ensemble performance, stage presence, and Latin jazz history.
The orchestra is led by Iliana Rose, an award-winning, first-generation Cuban-American pianist, composer, arranger and internationally acclaimed artist.
“Our time goes far beyond creating notes: we give young musicians a real understanding of the rhythms, history, and culture that make Latin jazz what it is,” Rose commented. “They work hard, have a lot of fun, and end up making truly extraordinary music together,” he added.

What else does the program include?
Students learn alongside educators and professional Latin jazz performers in an environment designed to strengthen musicality and foster creativity, collaboration, and cultural understanding.
The program also gives them the opportunity to study repertoire, rhythms, and musical traditions that are often underrepresented in school music programs.
