This is not the first time that fake profiles have been reported on Tinder that all they want to do is scam you. This method is known as catfish , the scammer fakes an identity to approach a person, create an emotional bond with them, and then ask for money to solve an urgent financial problem.

The first step: create an emotional bond
Thomas told Ana he had a daughter, Rose, who was attending a boarding school in Ireland. “She wrote me several emails and even sent me photos,” Ana says.

Tinder scam: they ask you for money to solve an imminent problem
Thomas told Ana he was being sent on a mission to Ukraine. To try to avoid this, Ana emailed the alleged general at the U.S. Army base in Syria, "Sani George," asking to be allowed to return home with her and their daughter, Rose.
The alleged general responded by telling him that he had to send a series of personal data to the “headquarters of the United States Department of Defense” to continue with his request: full name, occupation, nationality, city, telephone number, etc. But it is never a good idea to share personal data with strangers, as Maldita has explained before.

In the next email from "General Sani George," they requested a sum of money. In another email, the supposed general urges him to make the payment as soon as possible: "As soon as your emergency leave payment is made, it will be with you at home within the next 4 business days."
Ana then realized she was being scammed: “I didn't send anything because as soon as I received the email from the supposed general requesting money, I realized I'd fallen for a scam.”
