The Unique Population Registry Code (CURP) is an 18-character alphanumeric code that is intended to serve as an individual record for all inhabitants of Mexico, nationals and foreigners, as well as Mexican men and women who reside in the United States and other countries abroad.
This means that, if you are Mexican and live in the United States, you have the possibility of processing your CURP online; Download it and keep a printed and digital copy.
What is the CURP for?
For Mexicans residing in the United States, the CURP is especially useful to use as a proof of identity document in some procedures carried out at the Mexican Consulates in the United States.
For example:
- Mexican passport. The CURP can be used as part of the documentation necessary to comply with the issuance requirements or renewal of the Mexican passport in the United States.
- Mexican consular registration. Starting in 2022 there is a third generation of the consular registration which serves to identify Mexicans abroad. One of the new elements that were incorporated is the possibility of including the CURP of the Mexican abroad who requests registration.
Why is it “Unique”?
The CURP is a key that is assigned personally. That is, the key in perseverance is not repeated for any person.
Being "unique," it is intended to identify each person who processes it through a code or key assigned by the Mexican government. That is, every Mexican citizen living in the United States and other countries abroad, and every foreigner residing in Mexico.
Because of this, the CURP is a document that can be used as a form of identification for different procedures before the government, inside and outside Mexican territory.

You must present the newborn's American birth certificate, apostilled and translated into Spanish, and your identification documents such as your passport or your INE credential.
Once you have processed the birth certificate, you can then process the baby's CURP.
In some cases, Mexican consulates can process the birth certificate and Unique Population Registration Code at the same time. The suggestion is that you ask directly at the headquarters of the consulate where you are going to carry out the procedure.

Hi, I can't get the course, what do I do?
I've been trying to get a photo ID for 22 years and haven't been able to. I live in California and the Mexican consulate treats me very badly; they don't even give me a chance to talk.
