The return to school is just around the corner, and thousands of children will be going back to the classroom. For this reason, organizations, churches, and community groups around the state are planning various family events where they will distribute backpacks. Free vaccines and medical exams  

Saturday July 11:  The organization Embrace, together with Novant Health, will be holding a community health day where children aged 0 to 18, without health insurance or who have Medicaid, will be able to receive the vaccines required to return to school

Medical evaluations will also be carried out for adults over 18 years of age.

Free eye exam  

Monday, July 20:  The organization Embrace, in partnership with Vision to Learn, will be offering free eye exams for children ages 5 to 18, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Vision to Learn will also be providing free eyeglasses if needed. You can schedule an appointment by calling 704-369-4145 or via WhatsApp at 704-807-3107.

“Back to School Bash” 

Saturday August 15:  Kids Street Urgen Care will be hosting a Back to School Party from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at 10039 University City Blvd Suite A, Charlotte, NC 28213, where free backpacks and school supplies will be given to the first 300 attendees. 

The event will feature fun activities for children, including inflatables, a foam party, face painting, and prizes such as tablets, Apple watches, Nintendo Switch Lite, and gift cards will be given away. 

Burlington (Alamance)

“Backpacks and more. Back to School” 

Saturday August 8:  From 10:00 am to 2:00 pm this family event will be taking place, where in addition to the distribution of school backpacks for school-aged children, there will also be fun activities. food trucks and community organizations.  

The organization Valores NC, which is organizing the event, said that the participating tables will be part of a passport/bingo style activity, designed to help families learn about and connect with resources during the event.

Randolph County

“Back to School Extravaganza” 

Saturday August 8:  Organizations and churches in Randolph County have joined together to hold the “Back to School Extravaganza”, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Eastside Park, located at 627 Brewer St, Asheboro, NC 27203. 

They will have free backpacks and school supplies, inflatables, hot dogs, face painting, live music, food trucks, and fun for the whole family.  

Guilford County

Vaccines for returning to school 

Dates in July and August:  The Guilford County Public Health Division (GCPH) will hold an immunization event for students from kindergarten through twelfth grade to ensure they are up to date on required vaccinations for the return to school. 

Students can receive required vaccinations by appointment at GCPH clinics in Greensboro (1100 East Wendover Avenue) and High Point (501 East Green Drive), Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. You can call: 336-641-3245 to schedule an appointment.

Appointment availability is extended until 6:00 pm at both the Greensboro and High Point clinics on the following dates in July: 14, 16, 21, 23, 28 and 30. In August: 4 and 6. 

The department requests that parents or guardians of children bring their health insurance or Medicaid card, as well as their immunization records, to the clinic. 

Catawba County

“Back to School Giveaway”  

Saturday August 15:  In Newton, Catawba County, the annual distribution of backpacks filled with school supplies will take place from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. The event will be held at Good News Church, located at 1500 NW Blvd, Newton, NC 28658. Children must be present to receive the backpacks.

Basic haircuts for children will also be offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and there will be face painting, games, and hot dogs.

Hanover County

“Back to School Bash” 

Saturday August 22:  Southside Baptist Church in Wilmington will hold its Back to School Party from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at 3320 S College Rd, Wilmington, NC 28412. There will be a school supply giveaway, games, food, live music, and more. 

Caldwell County

Saturday August 22:  Meadowbrook Baptist Church will be holding its "Back to School Party" from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at 914 Meadowlane Dr NW, Lenoir, NC 28645. There will be backpacks and school supplies for the first 100 children, hot dogs, games, activities, inflatables, and much more.
