North Carolina, Raleigh-  Faced with the painful moment of the death of a pet, owners in North Carolina have various alternatives according to their preferences and budgets.

This was reported to Enlace Latino NC Anne Smiley, Wake County Animal Control Officer.

According to Smiley, the most used alternatives are burial and cremation. Although in some areas owners can ask authorities to remove their deceased pets for free.

Burying a pet in North Carolina

In North Carolina, state law allows people to bury their deceased pets in their own yard. Although in that case, Smiley explained, the regulations mandate compliance with certain requirements.

“Those who decide to bury their pets in the garden should do so at least one meter deep. In addition, they have to carry out the burial within a period of less than 24 hours after death,” said the specialist.

On the other hand, although it is not mandatory, Smiley strongly recommended the use of powdered lime to cover the pet.

“Cremation is the path most people take,” Smiley said.

This is an alternative for those who do not have a garden where they can bury their pet, or who simply prefer another way to say goodbye to their pet.

To cremate a pet in North Carolina, you need to hire a company to perform the task. The City of Charlotte Animal Control service recommends the service of 3 companies available in the area:

  • Paws, Whiskers and Wags
  • Faithful Companion
  • Good Shepherd

Pet cremation services in North Carolina range in price from approximately $50 to $400. The variation in the price of the cremation service will depend on the products chosen by the clients, among which are urns, memorials and even jewelry made from the ashes.

In some cases, the private service that companies offer to cremate a pet also includes the collection of the lifeless animal from the home.

Request Dead Animal Pickup in Charlotte or Raleigh

Residents of the cities of Charlotte and Raleigh have the ability to request free collection of deceased pets.

The body in charge of this task is the solid waste special services division.

To request a deceased pet pickup service in Charlotte, call 311.

In Raleigh, call Customer Service at 919-996-3245. Solid Waste Services collects the animals within 24-48 hours of receiving the request.

If you use this service, the Animal Control organization recommends taking two considerations into account:

Collection is carried out only upon request. No pets or dead animals should be placed in your trash container.

“The municipal ordinance imposes requirements on any animal collected from homes or businesses. The animal must not weigh more than 100 pounds and must be placed on the sidewalk. It is also helpful for the animal to be placed in a plastic bag if possible.”

On the other hand, city ordinance prohibits staff from entering any private property to remove animals.
