What is VITA LATINO?
VITA Latino was launched in the Charlotte area in 2022 through Common Wealth Charlotte (CWC), for Latinos experiencing economic hardship and financial insecurity that can be exacerbated during tax season.
“Despite the requirement to prepare taxes annually, the cost of doing so can be prohibitive. Recognizing the opportunity to alleviate this tax preparation burden for many in Charlotte’s Latino community, CWC launched VITA LATINO,” the statement said. CWC website.
VITA Latino is offered as part of CWC’s Buenas Finanzas Carolinas initiative, or “Good Finances Carolinas.”
“Buenas Finanzas offers CWCs a full suite of financial education and capability services, but through a culturally competent lens, to better fit Charlotte’s growing and underserved Latino population,” the site reads.
Successful program
In 2024, VITA Latino saved its clients $155,700 in tax preparation costs and returned $709,580, more than double the amount for 2023.
For the program, this is a particularly significant achievement because tax season gives clients access to additional funds, which positively impacts their overall financial well-being and future outlook.
For the 2024 season, VITA Latino assisted 964 individuals and prepared 519 tax returns in its service areas located in Charlotte, Gastonia, and Concord.
VITA Latino is supported by corporate sponsors such as Bank of America, the National Association of Latino Community Active Builders (NALCAB), as well as 23 community partners who, in addition to lending their space for clients to meet with certified volunteers, also assisted with marketing, increasing the reach of the program and its offerings.
