Casting a vote is only one part of the process. Many voters in North Carolina also want to know how to verify that their ballot was received and counted.

With new rules and changes in the electoral processAnd regardless of how you vote, there are ways to find out if your vote was registered and counted.

If you want to make sure your vote was received and counted, it's important to know that the verification process changes depending on the voting method that I have used.

If you vote during early voting

After placing the ballot in the scanner, the system immediately registers your vote.

Voters can access the State Board's Voter Search tool and verify that their name appears:

  • Voting Method: EARLY VOTING
  • Ballot Status: VALID RETURN
  • Vote Status: ACCEPTED

This information usually appears the day after you vote. (NCSBE)

If you vote on election day

When you insert the ballot into the tabulator, the votes are recorded immediately and become part of the results that are published on election night.

Subsequently, the voter can confirm that they voted by checking the Your Voter History section within Voter Search.

That history will show:

  • Voted Method: IN-PERSON ELECTION DAY

The Board clarifies that this information may take several weeks to update, because each county must first complete audits and other post-election procedures. (NCSBE)

If you vote by mail

The Board explains that voters can track the entire process of their ballot through:

  • BallotTraxwhich shows when:
    • The ballot was sent,
    • was received,
    • It was accepted.

You can also check on Voter Search, where the ballot status will appear. (NCSBE)

What is the voter's story?

The Board emphasizes that the voter's record does not show who they voted for, but only that they participated in an election.

It includes information such as:

  • election date;
  • voting method (early, by mail or on election day);
  • county;
  • In primary elections, the party whose primary you chose to vote for.

The confidentiality of the vote is protected. (NCSBE)
