Asheville, located in the Appalachian Mountains in western North Carolina, has been recognized as one of the 12 best travel destinations for 2025 by Forbes Travel Guide.
The city stands out as the only one in the state and one of the few in the United States to appear on this globally prestigious list, alongside destinations such as Amsterdam, the Maldives and Brisbane.
The recognition comes at a time of reconstruction. In September 2024, the Hurricane Helene caused at least $53 billion in damage in North Carolina, severely impacting Asheville and western communities in the state.
However, the city has shown a resilience remarkable and many of its shops, restaurants, galleries and art studios have already reopened.
Tourism as a boost for recovery
As highlighted Forbes In explaining why Asheville was chosen for its list of 12 places to visit in 2025, “Most of downtown Asheville is open to the public, including shops, restaurants, galleries, and art studios.”
The magazine states that “tourists can also enjoy the mountain town's abundant breweries, such as Highland Brewing Company and Archetype Brewing.”
But above all, they highlight “Asheville's most famous attraction, the Biltmore Estate, with its 8,000 acres and castle-like appearance, along with its four-star inn, are welcoming visitors.”
Tourism has become a key component of Asheville’s economic recovery.
In addition to its famous craft breweries and the majestic Biltmore Estate, tourists can explore the Blue Ridge Parkway, ideal for walks and car rides.
The scenic highway has restored access, although visitors are advised to check which areas are open before traveling.
The same is true for many areas of the West, including roads and tourist attractions, which is why both Buncombe County and the City of Asheville are asking tourists to plan their trips in advance and keep in mind that much of the area may still be impacted.

A destination recognized for its resilience
Asheville's mention on the Forbes list not only highlights its tourist attractions, but also the spirit of its community. Explore Asheville, Buncombe County's official tourism agency, emphasizes the rebuilding message.
“Asheville is calling you back again. Be part of the comeback. We're open.”
Although some areas, such as River Arts District, Biltmore Village and Swannanoa, have a longer road to recovery, the community continues to show great solidarity and perseverance. Asheville’s inclusion on this global list reinforces the message that the city is moving forward and is ready to welcome visitors with open arms.
