North Carolina, Charlotte – Colombians residing abroad have already begun to vote for the Colombian presidential elections for the period 2022-2026.
According to Law 1475 of 2022, Colombians can start voting one week in advance; that is, from yesterday, Monday, May 23, to Saturday, May 28, in the so-called early voting. Taking into account that Sunday, May 29 is the official election day.
Presidential Elections 2022:who can vote?
The Colombians who will be able to exercise their democratic right are those over 18 years of age who have their ID registered.
For this, the Colombian government set the deadline of March 29 so that they could register to participate from abroad in the presidential elections; and thus Colombians could establish their voting place in the consulate closest to their place of residence.
How many Colombians will be able to vote
According to a report from the National Registry of Civil Status of Colombia, dated April 29, of the almost 5 million Colombians who live outside their country, a total of 972,764 Colombians are authorized to vote abroad.
There will be 1,343 tables enabled for Colombians to vote, distributed in 250 voting stations in 67 countries.
Where can you vote in the elections?
There are currently 12 Colombian consulates in the United States, which as of Monday, May 23, will have a site, either the consular headquarters or a nearby satellite location, designated so that Colombians from their respective jurisdictions can go to vote early.
The hours established in all consulates, both for the week of early voting and for election day, will be: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
It should be noted that on Sunday, March 29, Colombians will only be able to vote in the city where They registered their ID.
All consulates have published the positions for early voting and for Election Day on their websites.
For this, each consulate has established a number of voting stations in the states under its jurisdiction, in order to facilitate the movement of its compatriots on the official election day.

¿What documents do you need to be able to participate in the elections?
In order to vote, Colombian voters must have on hand the yellow citizenship card with holograms or the new digital card, whether physical (polycarbonate) or downloaded to their mobile device (only for the digital card).
According to the National Registry of Civil Status, “neither the ID password, nor the passport, nor any other document are valid.”
If you are not sure if you have registered your ID
If the registration of the ID has been previously carried out at a consulate or embassy, it is not necessary to carry out the process again.
But if the Colombian moved to a state that does not correspond to the jurisdiction of the consulate where he registered the ID, he must make the change of address and register the ID again in person at the consular headquarters that will assign him the new voting position.
If you are not sure whether you have completed this process, or which voting position corresponds to you, you can verify this information in the site of the National Registry of Civil Status of Colombia.
The official results of Colombia's 2022 presidential election will be released until the voting deadline of May 29, 2022.
