North Carolina, Charlotte –  With nearly two years of pandemic, and the increase in housing rents, many families in the Charlotte area face multiple difficulties in being able to meet their rent or mortgage payments; and face evictions.

There are several organizations in the area that are helping with financial assistance to those families and individuals who are facing problems paying their rent or mortgage due to situations related to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Some of this help also includes assistance with mortgage payments.

Where to go

RAMPCLT

This rental and mortgage payment assistance assistance was launched by the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and DreamKey Partners, due to the pandemic. It focuses on providing assistance, as well as other financial aid, to people impacted by the pandemic.

Applications are currently closed, but will be reopened at some point in the remainder of January.

Those with an income up to 80% of the area median, and experiencing “a Covid-19 related hardship” and “who have been served with an eviction notice and have a court date within 90 days" ; will have priority in the new round of assistance.

Crisis Assistance Ministry

This agency leads emergency financial assistance for residents of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

The agency offers assistance with the payment of rent, as well as utilities.

In accordance with the requirements to apply with the agency, You do not need to provide a Social Security or state ID to apply for assistance.  for the payment of rent. A photo ID issued by another country may be presented.

Matthews HELP Center

This charitable agency in Matthews Township focuses on offering assistance to families and individuals experiencing unforeseen financial crisis, to pay back rent and/or utilities.

The agency only serves by appointment, and to request help, people must fill out an online form, after which they will receive an email with details of the steps to follow and the documents required to receive assistance.

Among the documents requested by the agency, the passport is a valid identification document, as well as the W-7.

This Charlotte-based organization focuses on addressing affordable housing issues and provides rental assistance as part of its “Homeless to Housing” program.

As part of this program, the agency offers three types of payment assistance:

-Assistance with rent payment:  for low-income individuals, veterans and people with disabilities.

-Relocation Assistance:  for people who are survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, people suffering a medical crisis, or who have been released from prison.

-Avoid foreclosure:  offers foreclosure avoidance counseling, and connects people with mortgage relief resources.

Covid-19 Mortgage Relief Assistance Program

Since 2021, the City of Charlotte has had the program: “COVID-19 Mortgage Relief Assistance Program”.

Homeowners who have an active down payment assistance loan with: HouseCharlotte, or who have an income up to 80% of the area median income and whose income has been affected by the pandemic will “be prioritized” to receive attendance.

The program provides “up to three months of mortgage payments,” and those who obtain the funds must attend “foreclosure prevention counseling” meetings.

This assistance is offered to anyone regardless of their status in the country.
