Riding a motorcycle in North Carolina can be a practical and functional means of transportation. Riding a motorcycle requires more than skill and a passion for two wheels; to do so legally, you need to include what is known as “mention of motorcycles”  on your driver's license issued to the NCDMV, whether it is a provisional, regular, or commercial license.

This article explains the requirements, steps, and benefits of obtaining this endorsement, with information specific to the Latino community in North Carolina.

Why is the mention of motorcycles important?

Have the mention of motorcycle (motorcycle endorsement, in English) on your driver's license is not only a legal requirement, but also a way to ensure your safety and the safety of others while driving. The endorsement allows you to demonstrate that you know the specific traffic rules and regulations that North Carolina requires for motorcycle operators; and that you possess the necessary skills to operate a motorcycle on the streets, highways and routes of North Carolina.

Does it include electric motorcycles?

The motorcycle endorsement applies to both gas-powered and electric motorcycles, as long as they meet the legal specifications for motorcycles in North Carolina. This means that if the vehicle is classified as a motorcycle based on its power and speed, you will need to add this endorsement to your driver's license.
