When you apply for a new Social Security Card, will you be assigned a new Social Security Number or will you keep your old one?
consulted by Enlace Latino NC , Social Security Office officials explained that “you may be assigned a new number” only if someone is misusing your Number and you “have done everything you can to fix the problems caused.”
In other words, if you request a replacement Social Security Card, even if your card has been stolen, you will receive a new one with the same number. Changing your number is only an exception that occurs if someone else is using your social security number and the crime does not stop despite reporting.
What should you do if you think someone is using your Social Security Number?
As reported by authorities from the Social Security Office, if a person suspects that someone else is using their Social Security Number to work, or has received a notice from the treasury of income that is not theirs, they should report the problem by calling 1- 800-772-1213.
However, if your Number has been used by another person to make bills or obtain credit, the Social Security Office cannot correct your credit history.
In that case, they suggest following the following steps:
1. Notify the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) by calling 1-877-ID-ROBO (438-4338).
2. File a complaint online with the Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov
3. File a report with the local police or police department where the identity theft occurred and retain a copy of the police report as proof of the crime.
4. Contact the fraud units of the three major credit reporting agencies:
– Equifax: 1-800-525-6285; www.equifax.com
– Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289; www.transunion.com
– Experian: 1-888-EXPERIAN (1-888-397-3742); www.experian.com
5. Call each creditor to report fraud on any account that has been tampered with or opened fraudulently.
6. Close credit accounts that you know or believe have been manipulated or opened fraudulently.
Just complete those steps, and if the crime is not stopped, you will be assigned a new Social Security Number.
