North Carolina, Raleigh – If you lost the title to your car registered in North Carolina, you have the option of starting a simple and inexpensive process to obtain a copy.
The registered owner of a vehicle can apply through the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) by completing the form MVR-4.
The document must be notarized and completed exactly like the original. Additionally, a fee of $21,50 must be paid.
There is a mandatory 15-day waiting period after DMV receives a duplicate title application before a certificate of title can be issued.
Steps to request a duplicate car title
- Locate your local DMV office.
- Present and bring the MVR-4 application.
- Complete the document.
- Show your ID.
- Pay the fee and taxes (check, cash, card).
- Your information will be verified, payment processed and a replacement title provided. This process shouldn't take long. You will have to wait 15 days before receiving the finalized duplicate title.
You cannot change the legal ownership of the vehicle

Title applications require 10 to 15 business days to process, but the DMV offers an expedited service, known as "instant title," in which titles are processed and issued the same day or the next business day.

The NCDMV may issue instant titles for duplicate title applications that require a 15-day waiting period.
The client would request the instant title and pick it up at the same registration agency on the 16th.
NCDMV does not issue instant titles for, among others, the following:
- Any title that requires a wait for review of the work.
- Old vehicles.
- Court orders.
- Salvage (given a total loss by the insurer)
- Out-of-state title for a state that does not report to the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS).
