Obtaining U.S. citizenship or nationality is an important step for thousands of immigrants each year. Within the naturalization process, one of the most well-known is the civics exam, also known as the citizenship test. This oral test, administered in English, measures knowledge of the government, history, and symbols of the United States.
What is the citizenship test in 2025?
The civics test is part of the interview. naturalization carried out by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
In its 2025 version, the test includes 128 official questions on topics such as: the US government and its three branches, the Constitution and fundamental rights, key moments in the country's history, symbols and national holidays.
During the interview, which is conducted in English, the USCIS officer will select up to 20 questions from this list. To pass, you must answer at least 12 correctly.

Special considerations for people over 65 years of age
If you are 65 or older and have been a permanent resident for at least 20 years, you can opt for a simplified version of the exam. In that case, you can take the test in the language of your choice. The officer will ask you 10 questions, and you must answer at least 6 correctly to obtain U.S. citizenship.
