A new design of driver's license of North Carolina will begin airing starting this week. The goal is to help combat fraud.
According to the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV), in addition to driver's licenses, driver's licenses and state identification cards will also have a new, more secure design.
"I'm proud to announce the implementation of the most secure credential in the history of our great state. Our new licenses and IDs will be among the most secure identification documents in the world."
NCDMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin
The new design elements are among more than 50 security features used to assist law enforcement in fraud deterrence and detection, the NCDMV highlighted about the new driver's license.

What does the new design contain? North Carolina Driver's License
The new design of the North Carolina driver's license will have the following features in its new design:
Laser engraving: The new driver's license is a card made from 100% polycarbonate, personalized using laser engraving technology. Due to its composition, the card will not only look different, but it will also feel and sound different.

North Carolina Images: The card features images familiar to North Carolinians, with splashes of blue and green chosen specifically to correspond with well-known state attributes, such as its rolling hills and abundant nature.
Patterns and letters in high relief: The card will feel stiffer and will have patterns and letters both embossed and engraved on the surface of the card. When dropped on a table, it will make a unique metallic sound.
Symbols of North Carolina: The front of the card includes the state flower, known as the dogwood, the state flag, the outline of the state border, a marble salamander, and a lighthouse, all set against the western hills. The back of the card features the Spanish Colonial “Mustang” horse grazing along one of the many beaches in eastern North Carolina.

Current licenses and identification cards will remain valid until their expiration date. That is, you don't have to change it.
