What are the payment methods?

To cover the cost of a driver's license, the DMV accepts cash, money orders, personal checks, credit and debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover) at all its offices.

Check payments, whether sent by mail or in person, must:

  • Be payable to NCDMV

  • Be accompanied by two forms of identification

  • Be written in blue or black ink

  • Have the pre-printed name, address, and telephone number of the check holder

  • Be issued by a bank based in North Carolina or a bank with a branch in the state

A card, either credit or debit, is required for online transactions that require payment.

The NDDMV charges a fee for processing card payments: 1.22% in office, 1.85% online, and 2% in self-service kiosks.

Contactless payment

Currently, payments using Apple Pay, Android Pay, Samsung Pay, and other contactless cards for Visa and MasterCard transactions are also accepted at license plate agencies.

In the future it is expected that these same payment options will be available at licensing offices.

'Returned' checks

NCDMV services may be blocked for those who have paid for or received a DMV service with a returned check or credit card chargeback.

It is worth mentioning that NCDMV applies an additional 10% tax (minimum of $10) on all returned items, and an interest penalty is assessed each month if the balance due is not paid within 30 days.

Users can make payments for a returned item online through MoneyGram.

Interested parties can also make payments by money order, cashier's check or certified check, which must include the person's reference number.

Personal and business checks are not accepted as payment for a return.
