The Honduran government is implementing in its 13 consulates in the United States, the direct birth registration process to obtain dual nationality for minors born to Honduran parents in the United States.

Consul Enrique Flores, of the Consulate General of Honduras in Charlotte , said that with this new direct registration system for dual nationality, parents can obtain their children's Honduran birth certificates on the same day.

"To help our fellow citizens with these procedures that previously took more than seven months, the government has just implemented this new direct registration system, which means that, the day they come to register, that same day they complete the entire process and leave with their Honduran birth certificate," the official explained to Enlace Latino NC .

In February, Enlace Latino NC  reported that the Birth registrations for dual nationality had skyrocketed between 300% and 400%, due to Honduran parents' fear of being deported and trying to keep their children up to date with this document. The consul said that this process is currently on the rise.

“They must have the original Birth Certificate apostilled at the Department of State which takes about a month,” the consul indicated.

Requirements for birth registrations

Main requirements:

  • Birth certificate original apostilled by the Department of State
  • Valid identification of both parents (passport or DNI)
  • The process is completely free.

Accepted ages:  6 months to 21 years

The consul said that if the person prefers to secure his turn, he can schedule an appointment in the systemHowever, if you come without an appointment, it is advisable to show up at the consular office before 7:00 a.m. Space is limited.

Now it is more important to have your documents up to date

Due to the termination of TPS for Hondurans  As of September 9, you must have your documents up to date, since now without a temporary status you are exposed to the deportation, in addition to facing a cumbersome process to obtain dual nationality for their children born here if they are deported.

"Few people have come to ask about TPS; this has happened more at other consulates. But several women from Charlotte have come, worried about getting their children's papers because their father was deported," Flores said.

In this regard, the consul said that, in the event of deportation of one of the parents, it becomes difficult for the parent who stays behind to be able to return to his country with his children since for him exit permit for minors the signature of both parents is required.

The Consulate continues to handle some procedures without an appointment.

At this consulate Hondurans can apply for a passport, the DNI or the Consular Registration or birth registration for dual nationality without an appointment.

In this regard, the consulate has been publishing in its Facebook page  an advertisement to encourage Hondurans to do these procedures without an appointment that says: “Don't believe in NO APPOINTMENT anymore ".

However, this walk-in system is not new at the Charlotte consular office. Consul Flores implemented this walk-in system for about three years now, to help fellow citizens have their identity documents on hand more quickly.

At this consulate, passports and consular cards are issued on the same day, as they have special printers to securely print these documents. The DNI takes between three and six months to process.

Appointments are still recommended for other procedures.

The appointment system is necessary for legal procedures, but it is recommended for any procedure, in order to ensure an appointment and avoid having to wait to be served in the order they arrive.

“In Charlotte and at all Honduran consulates, appointments can be made using the appointment system, but for people who require certain legal documents, such as birth certificates, we do handle a limited number of walk-ins. All other legal procedures require an appointment,” the consul indicated.
